Roh In-yeong, head of technical sales team at KEM Co., Ltd., explains the reason for exhibiting in ‘SIMTOS’.

“There are even places that achieve export performance for several years during the exhibition period of only a few days. I am grateful that influential buyers who are hard to meet usually come directly to the booth and even take care of one-on-one business matching as a follow-up management.”

Roh In-yeong, head of technical sales team at KEM Co., Ltd., which produces and exports industrial parts such as oil coolers, explained the reason for exhibiting at 'SIMTOS', an international machine tool exhibition. He said that he was looking forward to holding the exhibition because it could increase the common value of participating companies, organizers, and visiting buyers.

Behind the reputation of 'Korea as an export powerhouse' based on manufacturing industries such as automobiles, shipbuilding, and aerospace, there is a 'root industry' that has led the industry in an invisible place. The machine tool industry, a representative root industry, has grown enough to boast the world's 5th place in factory machine production, supporting the growth of various industries.

Thirty years ago, in June 1984, when no one was paying attention, the first machine tool exhibition in Korea was held at a tent exhibition hall in Yeouido, Seoul, which was about 1,000 pyeong in size, with 48 companies from 4 countries participating. The exhibition that took its first step under the name of 'Korea Machine Tool Show' is the predecessor of SIMTOS. At SIMTOS, which played a pivotal role in helping Korea grow into a machine tool manufacturing powerhouse in half a century, 853 companies from 33 countries set up 5,513 booths this year. CIMT has grown into one of the world's top 4 machine tool exhibitions.

SIMTOS' greatest competitiveness lies in global networking, which is more recognized overseas. 53% of all participating companies are foreign companies, and 64% of the total number of visitors exceeding 100,000 are industry officials who have the right to make purchasing decisions. It is a record that is hard to find not only in Korea but also abroad. Moreover, the re-participation rate of exhibitors is over 85%. The number of pre-registered visitors is 76,000, and the revisit rate of visitors exceeds 96%. It is for this reason that SIMTOS is called the largest industrial exhibition in Korea most favored by foreign buyers.

However, the history of SIMTOS has not been smooth. In the early 2000s, as industrial equipment and various types of machines proliferated with 'high-tech', machine tools were treated as obsolete equipment. However, SIMTOS overcame the crisis by actively embracing market changes and trends by moving away from simple machine tool-centered exhibitions in the past and integrating the trend of convergence with other technologies such as robots, IT, and automation.

The organizers of SIMTOS, which is about to hold its 17th event in 2016, are experimenting with an innovative exhibition management system. It is to surpass the title of Korea's No. 1 and Asia's 3 major industrial exhibitions. Shin In-ho, senior director of the Korea Machine Tool Industry Association, said, “At the 2016 exhibition, we plan to always operate a matchmaking center that arranges meetings with buyers who want to meet anywhere in Korea as well as on-site.” We will develop it into a global top exhibition that represents Korea by focusing on making practical transactions on site.”
